Mechanism of action
Tirzepatide is a novel dual receptor agonist of glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). Under normal physiological conditions after food intake, the intestine releases endogenous GIP and GLP-1 hormones, which promote insulin secretion, suppress appetite, delay gastric emptying, and enhance satiety. Tirzepatide mimics the actions of these naturally occurring hormones by activating both GIP and GLP-1 receptors in the body.
